Title: Grammage of paper and paperboard (weight per unit area)
Overview
This method provides the industry with a way to measure and report the mass per unit area of a paper product. It is generally reported in grams per square meter (g/m2) and commonly referred to as grammage or basis weight. It can easily be converted to a wide variety of ream weights. The basis weight can be used to interpret many physical properties including bursting strength, tear, and tensile by calculating an index value.
Samples
The method measures the weight of 5000 cm2 which requires seventeen, 8.5” x 11” sheets of paper. However, basis weight calculations can be performed on whatever sample are available.
Reporting
Because of the large number of ream weights used in the US, Integrated Paper Services reports basis weight as g/m2, and includes specific ream weights only when requested by the customer.
