Standard: TAPPI
Method: T 494
Title: Tensile properties of paper and paperboard (using constant rate of elongation apparatus)
Overview
Tensile strength is indicative of the strength derived from fiber strength, fiber length and bonding. The testing is performed by clamping a sample strip between two clamps, one which will remain stationary while the other pulls the sample at a constant rate. Test values will be reported for tensile strength, stretch, tensile energy absorption, breaking length, and tensile index. Additional test values including stiffness and elasticity may be calculated and reported when requested.
Samples
To perform adequate testing, ten 8.5” by 11” sheets are requested. Ten replicates in both the MD and CD directions are required for this test. If sample quantity is limited, testing can be done by sampling fewer sheets and/or performing fewer replicates. This sampling information should be adequate for four or five TAPPI methods per request. If more methods are requested, please call to verify the necessary amount of sample.
